A Tale of Two Personalized Coffee Mugs

Today I’m 48 years old, and I want to tell you a little story about two mugs. More than likely you’ve seen a personalized photo mug, but you may not know how they can affect your life. This is why I want to share my story with you.
You see, about 8 years ago, on my 40th birthday, my father purchased me a personalized coffee mug for my big day. That Christmas I bought my dad one of these mugs as well. I can still remember my birthday when I opened up my mug. It said “Happy Birthday” and had a picture of my dad on it. That mug became one of my most cherished possessions.
After college, I moved halfway across the country to take a job in Virginia. A little too far away from my native St. Louis to have coffee with my dad in the morning; but with the mug he’d given me, it felt like I saw him every day as I had my coffee.
So that’s why I knew that a personalized coffee mug was the right gift for my mom’s birthday that year (I also got one for my Dad that Christmas). She was thrilled when she unwrapped it and saw my picture on the mug and she called to let me know how much she liked the not I’d put inside telling her how much I loved the mug and hoped she’d enjoy hers just as much.
My dad used that mug every day, just like I did. In a way, we were still having coffee together every morning even though we were hundreds of miles apart. My mom also started using hers daily - and my sister was soon clamoring for one of her own.
Sadly, my mom passed on about a year ago now. I went back to Baltimore to see my dad and he told me, the tears welling up in his eyes that my mom had wanted me to have something of hers. I started tearing up myself when I saw the mug I’d given to my mom almost three decades ago now. The mug had obviously gotten a lot of use. It’s something she’d loved as much as I had the one she’d given to me.
Now I have both of the mugs. They sit together in my cupboard in a place of importance. Each morning I still sit down for coffee and use the mug my father gave me. Of course, I always get out the one I gave him too. I can’t stand to see it up there by itself. Even though he’s been gone for some time, every morning when I drink my coffee, somehow it still seems like he is there with me having coffee. I have to believe that somewhere he’s drinking a cup of joe and thinking of me too.
